We are hungry…

I am hungry by Philippe Bousquet

The Emerging Voices 2 (EV2) project aims to investigate and elicit reflections on people’s experience of post-school education, training (PSET) in South Africa, as well as their views on learning and human development beyond the conventional notion of schooling. Through a variety of engagements, we are exploring the questions: How can the Post Schooling Education, Training and Development Sector best serve a progressive vision for human development in South Africa. And what do we need to bring that vision to life?

To help us to understand this question more fully, we will explore the following related questions:

  • What is the current reality of the PSETD sector?
  • How do key stakeholders in the PSETD sector experience their respective institutions and what are their ideas for improving them?
  • How do people living in rural / poor communities experience and imagine the usefulness of PSETD in their lives?
  • What is currently being done in South Africa and elsewhere that demonstrates or points to new possibilities for the PSETD sector?

This blog is a vehicle for sharing what we are learning within the broad EV2 team and with others who are interested in these questions. We will post stories, experiences, thoughts and questions – and encourage you to respond with your own experiences, thoughts and questions.

Perhaps you might want to start by sharing your thoughts on the sculpture above. Do you experience a gap between your ‘hunger’ for learning and the opportunities available to you?  What feels ‘out of reach’?  And why?  In your own life, what is the apple (your dream or goal) and what is the ladder that doesn’t extend far enough to get you there? What would need to happen to extend the ladder for everyone?  Thoughts…..?
